How do you relieve stress while you’re at work?
I’m stressed out about money problems, work problems, and medical problems. I’m at work and I’m having a hard time focusing. What can I do to relieve this stress? Maybe I should have called off today.
Reading other people’s problems here on Y!A does seem to help.

Depends what kind of job you have.

You can flirt with random people online which seems to work for some people. You can aimlessly browse the net and read random wikipedia articles.

You can read a book. Chat with co-workers about every day dumb shit. You can even try listening to your overly chatty co-workers once in awhile.

If you want, we can be pen pals. I’ll listen to your woes and given honest feedback if you’ll do the same for me.

First try stretching and breathing exercises just to get your body to feel better. Then write down all the things that are bothering you. Look it over and see if any of it can be worked out right away or if you can make a plan to work it out. Being organized in your mind is a start to organizing your life. See if you have someone trustworthy you can talk to about this. And then make sure you are incorporating things you really enjoy into your day, like reading, puzzles, exercise, shopping etc. And I found it does help to try and help others (like on Yahoo Answers) as long as you aren’t stalling on fixing your own issues. And Relax, you will be okay.

Calling in ’sick’ because you are worried isn’t going to alleviate your issues, and certainly could increase them. Frequent absences are often used as an excuse for termination. That would simplify the work problems, but definitely complicate the money problems. And stress WILL affect your health!

Call your doctor for an appointment and only take time off to get there and back. Tell him/her your issues for a full and complete diagnosis. Perhaps you need a referral to counseling.

At work, try to pinpoint the problems you are having and isolate the issues, causes, and what you can do. Sometimes it is just a matter of reorganizing your workspace to be a little less cluttered so you can lay hands on things.

Sometimes it is talking with your supervisor. But be careful with that. If you make noises that you just can’t handle the work load it could backfire on you. But if you can pinpoint a problem and provide a solution that will make paperwork easier for others in the office too you could score points for being a team player.

If your work problem is with another employee you need to work it out on your own without involving human resources OR your supervisor if you can.

To relieve your stress and tension right now, get outside for your break and just watch the trees blow in the wind or the clouds scud by. Don’t talk with anyone, just empty your mind, breathe deep, and relax.

Good luck.
