Product Description
Being “so stressed” has to be the most common description for a woman today — no matter your age or marital status, whether you have a career or work inside the home. Stress is the gift of modern life that keeps on giving, because, even after you’ve gotten through a stressful day or week, the effects on your body and mind linger, whether you’re aware of them or not. And they can build up and make you sick — unless you do something to stop them. That’s where So Stressed, a landmark new guide to women’s health, can help.

The realization that stress was the most common cause of all the different symptoms and ailments that their patients were coming to them for was a eureka moment for internationally renowned OB-GYN physicians Stephanie McClellan and Beth Hamilton. To find out how stress could be the root cause of diseases as disparate as chronic pain, gynecological disorders and depression, asthma and metabolic disorders, Drs. McClellan and Hamilton embarked on a unique medical quest — they wanted to find the latest discoveries emerging around the world in the science of stress and put them all together in treatments to help their patients now. Their urgent mission took them to the leading researchers at the best medical centers around the world, where they learned the exciting findings that they reveal in this fascinating new approach to women’s health, So Stressed.

With information from the medical and psychological sciences of stress that no other practicing physician or clinician has implemented, So Stressed shows you what stress is doing to every cell in your body, how it disrupts the intricate balance of your body’s systems, and most important what you can do, starting today, to restore your body’s health and prevent yourself from getting sick. Drs. McClellan and Hamilton — who are widely sought after for their compassionate manner and educational approach to their patients — have treated more than 16,000 women in their shared three decades of medical practice. Through their timely research and unique, integrative approach to patient care, they have developed four groundbreaking stress types, each with unique patterns for potential illness and disease — presented here for the first time — that you can use to identify the ways that stress is affecting your body and mind.

Once you know your unique stress profile, the doctors help you learn new ways to see and respond to stress, reduce it and its effects on your body, and even prevent the life-threatening illnesses it causes. You’ll find the right program — specifically designed for the way you fit into your stress type — with prescriptive advice for the best mental relaxation techniques, nutrition, exercise, and restoration practices for you. Filled with instructive and inspiring case stories from their patients’ and their own life experience, Drs. McClellan and Hamilton bridge the gap between the lab bench and the bedside in this comprehensive program for total health.

To call this book (So Stressed) Voodoo Science would be to cast aspersions on Voodoo Science. I am astounded that it got published since the author’s analyses and prescriptions for treatment of the various “stress types” has about as much supportive scientific evidence as has the use of frog spit for the treatment of breast cancer.

Examples:

The authors state that ” Vitamin D3 is particularly important for you (HypoP) to _prevent_ Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease.” (p. 254) The fact that Vitamin D3 will _prevent_ the development of these two devastating auto-immune disorders of the intestinal system will be glad news to the many physicians and researchers around the world seeking answers to the puzzle of IBD.

The authors also recommend that Hypo-P patients (who they describe as likely to have inflammatory bowel issues p. 253) drink kombucha tea as a source of healthy bacteria (p. 253 - 4) to nourish the gut. For healthy people this recommendation might be safe. But even they may want to think twice about drinking even the recommended 4 oz if they read what the Mayo Clinic has to say about this “healthy” food ( http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/kombucha-tea/AN01658) or Kombucha: A Systematic Review of the Clinical Evidence published in 2003 by the journal Research in Complementary Medicine. [...]

Toxic liver anyone? Anthrax?

Nuff said. And I only took on two (2) pages of this 336 page book.

While the authors may have some good ideas about how to reduce stress in your life (many borrowed from others) their assertions about the various stress-types and many of their recommended treatments rarely stand up to close examination. And, as with the kombucha tea, may actually prove dangerous to some readers.

My “professional” advice: skip this book (that mostly leaves a woman feeling guilty for feeling stressed) and go for a walk, get 8 hours of sleep, breath deeply, relax those shoulders and drink plenty of water. Spend the money on a good novel if you really must buy a book. But don’t buy this one.

Yes, stress can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to illnesses like colds, IBS, and (regular) stomach ulcers. BUT autoimmune diseases are NOT directly a result of stress. Autoimmune diseases are a combination of a genetic predisposition and environmental triggers. So stress *could* be an environmental trigger to an autoimmune disease, but the autoimmune disease would not come about without the genetic predisposition.

To the authors: Please double-check your facts before announcing them on national television and writing a book. It’s hard enough to have your immune system attack your body. We don’t need ignorant people telling us that it’ll go away if we just de-stress; it’s not that easy.

I agree that women have a lot of stress, and I personally have journalled to the extreme and have found it helpful. (Before my diagnosis with Ulcerative Colitis I journalled a lot more than I’ve had time to, since - probably 3 pages a day for a few decades.) I took huge exception to the interview on Good Morning America and the tie-in between Ulcerative Colitis and stress. So many infants and young children develop UC, for which there has been a gene identified. I have it, my son developed it at age 13. Sounds more like genes than stress to me.

I suppose to say stress can bring on UC is about as accurate as saying stress can bring on cancer or MS…… It would be more accurate to say that these conditions bring on stress rather than to say that stress brings on these conditions!

It is only until recently that I have come to more fully understand the stress a woman deals with on a regular basis. As the loving husband to a wonderful wife and newly minted mom, it is clear that stress (positive, negative, overt and subconscious) takes its toll on the female physche in a way that physically manifests through different symptoms, some of which are incredibly serious. This book insightfully reaffirms in a compelling and astute way how identifying, handling and/or removing stress from one’s life can literally cure physical maladies caused by the stress. It is a must read for any woman and a creative, unique, and amazingly engaging process for women to find, fix, and finish off the stress in their lives. Essentially, this book offers women the ability to hold stress accountable for its actions. It seems like an amazing breakthrough and I highly recommend this book any woman considering/looking for answers to their stress and health issues.
